If you're booked in or looking for a personable ski boot fitting with us here at Ski Exchange, you’re already considering one of the most important decisions for your comfort, performance, and enjoyment on the slopes.
To make sure you get the most from your appointment, it’s worth knowing a few things to bring with you on the day - nothing complicated, but each item will help us give you the best possible fit.
1. The socks you’ll ski in
This might sound obvious, but it’s surprisingly common for customers to show up in thick walking socks or casual winterwear (or nothing at all… please wear socks). Your ski socks should be thin to midweight, ideally merino or synthetic blend, and moisture-wicking.
Bringing the socks you plan to ski in means we’ll fit your boots to the real-world conditions your feet will be in - not a guess based on thicker or looser alternatives.
2. Your current insoles or custom footbeds (if you use them)
If you’ve previously used custom insoles in your shoes or old ski boots, bring them along. Even if we end up recommending a new footbed as part of the fitting, this gives us valuable insight into how your feet respond to support and volume.
3. Any old ski boots you’re replacing
If this is an upgrade rather than a first-time purchase, your old boots tell us a lot. How they’ve worn, where your pressure points are, and what may have (or haven’t) worked previously all help guide our approach.
4. Skiing history and preferences
You won’t need a CV - just be ready to chat through what kind of skier you are, what terrain you enjoy, and how often you hit the slopes. Are you focused on piste, dabbling in powder, or heading off-touring? This context lets us match boot type and flex to your actual use.
5. Clothing that lets you move easily
You’ll be flexing forward, buckling boots, and potentially spending a bit of time on your feet. So wear something comfortable - ideally trousers that can be pulled up slightly to expose your lower leg, as this helps with alignment and cuff assessment.
And finally… bring an open mind
It’s natural to walk into a ski shop with preferences on colour, brand, or technology - but when it comes to boots, that mindset can work against you. The truth is: the boot chooses you.
Our job as boot fitters is to guide you into the best basic shell shape for your foot, then customise it to ensure performance, comfort, and longevity. A boot that feels snug at first might be perfect after a few sessions - whereas something that feels too roomy right away is almost guaranteed to be a problem after a few weeks of use.
Whether it’s your first fitting or your fifth, Ski Exchange’s expert boot fitters in Dry Drayton near Cambridge are ready to help. With our Comfort Guarantee, we won’t rest until your boots feel just right.
