Ski kit checklist: everything to sort before first snow

Ski Exchange |

First snow has a habit of arriving before people are ready. Every year we get the same rush of last-minute calls the week the forecast turns, so here's what to check now while there's still time to actually sort it.

What should I check on my skis or snowboard before the season?

Start here, it's the bit that actually affects how your kit performs on the hill.

  • Base and edges serviced
  • Bindings tested and DIN checked against your current weight and ability
  • DIN rechecked if you've changed boots since your last outing, boot sole length affects the setting

What should I check on my boots?

Boots are the thing people put off longest, usually because problems only show up once you're actually on snow.

  • Buckles and liners checked for wear
  • Any discomfort from last season looked at now, most fit problems don't fix themselves
  • Buy now if you're due an upgrade, while sizes are still in stock

What about outerwear?

Easy to forget until you're stood in the rain finding out the hard way it's not as waterproof as it used to be.

  • Check waterproofing on jackets and salopettes, reproof if needed
  • Check zips and seals, replace anything that's failed

What small items get forgotten most often?

These are cheap and easy to sort, but they're always the last thing on the list.

  • Goggles, including a spare lens for flat light
  • Gloves that are actually waterproof, not just water-resistant
  • Helmet check if a few seasons old, foam degrades even without visible damage
