Second-Hand vs New Skis: What to Look for When Buying Used Kit

Ski Exchange |

It's in our name for a reason, buying and part-exchanging used kit properly is what we do! There's still a bit of hesitation around buying second-hand skis or boots, usually from people who've had a bad experience buying privately. Done properly, though, it's one of the best ways to get good kit without paying full price.

Is buying second-hand skis a good idea?

In most cases, yes, and it's worth understanding why before you write it off.

  • Often yes, especially for beginners and improving skiers who'll outgrow their first setup
  • Skis and boards don't change dramatically year to year, so a well looked after used pair can perform like new

What should I check on a used pair of skis?

A few checks tell you almost everything you need to know.

  • Base and edges for deep gouges or core shots, not just cosmetic scratches
  • Camber, make sure the ski still has proper spring and isn't dead flat
  • Bindings, check they're compatible with your boots and can be reset to your DIN

What should I check on used boots?

Boots need a bit more scrutiny than skis, since wear here is harder to spot at a glance.

  • Buckles and liners for wear, liners in particular lose their shape over time
  • Shell flex, a heavily used shell can feel softer than its stated flex rating
  • Fit still matters just as much as buying new, don't skip a proper fitting

Why buy used kit through Ski Exchange rather than privately?

This is really where the risk of buying second-hand disappears.

  • Used kit sold through us has been checked over, not sold as seen
  • We can service, reset bindings and fit boots properly before you take it away
  • Part-exchange your old kit against something newer at the same time

Bring your old kit in and we'll talk you through what it's worth against something newer!
