Getting Fit for the Slopes: Off-Season Training for Skiers

Ski Exchange |

The fitter you are before you get on snow, the more of the trip you'll actually enjoy! It's easy to treat a ski holiday like any other, book it, pack the bag, turn up. But skiing asks more of your body than most people expect, and the ones who put in a little prep beforehand are usually the ones still smiling on day five.

Why does fitness matter for skiing?

It's not about being an athlete, it's about not being caught out.

  • Skiing uses muscles most people don't train regularly, particularly the legs and core
  • Being undertrained is one of the biggest factors in fatigue-related falls and injuries later in a ski week
  • A bit of prep means more time skiing well and less time recovering on the sofa

What should I focus on training?

You don't need a gym membership overhaul, just a bit of focus in the right areas.

  • Legs, squats and lunges build the strength skiing demands
  • Core, stability work helps with balance and control on variable terrain
  • Cardio, skiing is more aerobically demanding than people expect, especially at altitude

When should I start training before a ski trip?

Earlier than most people think, but it doesn't need to be intense.

  • Ideally 6-8 weeks out, little and often beats a last-minute push
  • Even two or three sessions a week makes a noticeable difference by the time you're on snow

Does fitness affect what kit I need?

It's a question we don't get asked enough, but it genuinely matters.

  • Yes, a stronger, fitter skier can often handle a stiffer boot flex and more ski underfoot
  • Worth reassessing your setup if your fitness has changed significantly since you last bought kit
